EXPOSITION TEXT

Definition:   

An exposition text is a type of argumentative writing that aims to persuade the reader by presenting one side of an issue with arguments and evidence. It is commonly used in essays, editorials, debates, and opinion pieces.

Purpose:   

To convince or influence the reader by stating an opinion and supporting it with reasons, facts, or logical arguments.

Type:  

1. Analytical Exposition – Focuses on arguing a point of view (e.g., Why smoking should be banned). 

2. Hortatory Exposition – Gives recommendations (e.g., We should recycle more to protect the environment).

Structure: 

1. Thesis / Statement of Position: Introduces the topic. States the writer's opinion or position clearly. 

2. Arguments: Presents reasons to support the thesis. Each argument may be supported with evidence, examples, or explanations. 

3. Reiteration / Conclusion: Restates the writer’s opinion. Summarizes the key points. 

Language Features:

1. Present tense (e.g., People need access to clean water.)

2. Action verbs and thinking verbs (e.g., believe, argue, suggest)

 3. Connectives: firstly, in addition, however, therefore

4. Emotive words (e.g., essential, harmful, beneficial)

 5. Often uses modal verbs: should, must, need to, have to 

Example:

Students Should Wear School Uniforms 

Thesis:

Many people believe that students should wear uniforms in school. I strongly agree with this idea because it promotes equality, discipline, and school identity.

Arguments:

Firstly, wearing a uniform promotes equality. When students wear the same clothes, there is less chance of bullying or discrimination based on fashion or economic status. Everyone is treated the same.

Secondly, school uniforms create a sense of discipline. When students dress appropriately, they are more likely to behave respectfully and focus on their studies.

Lastly, uniforms help build school identity and pride. They show unity and belonging, and students are more likely to feel proud of their school.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, school uniforms are important for equality, discipline, and school pride. Therefore, all schools should require students to wear uniforms.

However, social media has been linked to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. The pressure to maintain idealized lives and constant exposure to curated content can lower self-esteem. Cyberbullying and harassment also contribute to emotional strain, especially among younger users.

Social media has reshaped society, offering valuable tools for communication but posing challenges like mental health risks and the spread of misinformation. Addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a healthier online environment.
