Isaac Newton: A Biography

Sir Isaac Newton, born in 1643, was an English polymath who is widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists of all time. His work laid the foundations for classical mechanics, and his contributions were pivotal to the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. Born prematurely in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, a few months after his father's death, Newton's early life was marked by solitude and intellectual curiosity rather than a conventional path. He was sent to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661, where he initially pursued a law degree, but soon became engrossed in the works of modern thinkers and the emerging scientific fields of mathematics and astronomy.

Newton's most fruitful period, which he later called his "annus mirabilis" or "year of wonders," occurred between 1665 and 1666, when the Great Plague forced Cambridge University to close. During this time of self-imposed quarantine at his family home, he began to develop his groundbreaking theories. He conceived the fundamental principles of calculus (which he called "fluxions"), conducted pivotal experiments with optics that demonstrated the composition of white light, and, famously, formulated his early thoughts on universal gravitation, inspired by the fall of an apple. These two years of intense, solitary study laid the groundwork for his most significant discoveries.

His scientific career formally began upon his return to Cambridge, where he became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. Newton's masterpiece, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), published in 1687, is a monumental work that described his three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. This book provided a comprehensive explanation of how objects move and interact, unifying celestial and terrestrial mechanics under a single set of laws. He also made significant contributions to the field of optics, building the first reflecting telescope and demonstrating that a prism could separate white light into a spectrum of colors.

In his later life, Newton moved to London and took on prominent roles, serving as Warden and later Master of the Royal Mint. He was elected President of the Royal Society in 1703 and was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705. Despite these public duties, he continued his work in theology and alchemy, though much of this research was not published until after his death. Isaac Newton passed away in 1727 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, leaving behind a legacy that fundamentally changed humanity's understanding of the physical world.
